“Who Moved My Cheese?” tells a story of change, of how we react to it, and the terrible straits we can find ourselves in when we don’t follow that change. The story is told in such simple terms, that one might mistakably think there is little value in the story. The story concerns four characters, two mice, and two “little people.” The characters live in a maze chasing after cheese. The cheese is intended to be a symbol for anything we chase after in life that we believe will make us happy. The author describes the trials and troubles we all have in life: joy, excitement, sorrow, greed, envy, stubbornness, fear, and the list goes on. As in life, the characters are never sure why the cheese is placed in the maze, nor the source of the cheese. When the characters are suddenly faced with change just like we are in life, some are ready and others are not. The book records one character’s progress and eventual triumph and the lessons he learns along the way. In a section after the story four friends describe the impact that the story had on them and how they saw themselves and their actions in the context of the story.
The story was short, simple and amazingly effective. After reading this book and doing a self-evaluation I learned a lot about myself and I believe that some of the ways of my life have been changed because of it. By working through the book I felt like a child again. I played along with the book and allowed myself to move though the maze as well. While doing so, I realized that the story somewhat resembled my life as well. I moved to Arizona last summer from my home in Lebanon, and the change hit me hard. It had reached a point where if I didn't change for the better, I would have faded from existence. Changed occurred in my life, and I was so comfortable with my old life, I didn't want to change myself. Then it hit me in my moment of darkness. Change is inevita
