In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s dramatic novel, The Great Gatsby which takes place in the rich part of New York during the summer of 1922. Nick Carraway, the narrator, talks about his friend Jay Gatsby’s obsession with Daisy Buchanan, nicks cousin. He also explains how Gatsby does everything he can to win Daisy over. Nick moves to New York to see how the rich life would be like. Unfortunanetly Nick is exposed to corruption, money, and murder. Gatsby bought a house directly across from Daisy, just so he could be near her. Gatsby often stares at the green light at the end of Daisy’s dock, which symbolizes hopes of his relationship with Daisy; however, the light of his hope fades to disillusionment. Although its good to have hopes and dreams, we should not depend are whole life upon them; since, not all dreams come true, some may turn into disillusionment.
The green light is an important factor in this novel, it symbolizes the possibility of Gatsby’s relationship with Daisy. “He stretched out his arms toward the dark water, in a curious way……[toward] a single green light, minute and a dock.”(26) The green light begins to slowly dim which is a comparison with Gatsby’s relationship with Daisy which also begins to fade away. “Possibly it had occurred to him that the colossal significance of the [green] light had flow vanished forever”(98). Once Gatsby realizes his realtion ship with Daisy is over it makes him realize that he can not depend on hopes and dreams because sometimes dissillusionment may take place.
The relationship with Gatsby and Daisy starts off weak in the begininning. Since Daisy only wanted to have a relationship with a rich man, she did not fall for him. As a result to this, Gatsby begin to work diligently on his goal of being rich. With his hard work ethic it took him 5 years to accomplish his goal of being rich.
