Prospero's intrigue by magic is what drives him into his troubles and yet frees him of those same troubles. Gonzalo supplies Prospero with the magical books for his studies. Prospero becomes so engrossed in his studies that he eventually almost gives his entire dukedom to his brother Antonio without realizing it. Prospero devoted his afternoons on the island to the study of magic. The symbols of Prospero's knowledge of magic are his robe, his wand and his books. At the end of the novel he agrees to burn all these objects if the nobles would just admit to their sins. Prospero's robe in itself performs magic by masking his personality when he wears it. Prospero uses his magic only for good causes. Unlike the witch Sycorax who is in partnership with the devil. When Caliban attempts to rape Miranda Prospero punishes him by making him carry wood and the only reason Caliban does is because he is afraid of the spirits that Prospero might set upon him to torment and pinch him. Prospero also punishes the nobles with magic. Prospero makes the ship come to the island by creating a storm which ruins the ship and leaves the passengers stranded in the sea and therefore able to float to the island with the assistance of Prospero's magic. He makes them do foolish things while on the island. Sebastien and Antonio talk about killing Gonzalo while he is sleeping however Ariel wakes Gonzalo before this is able to occur. Prospero also belives that Ferdennand is worthy of Miranda's love because he has been carrying the wood well for Prospero and therefore he uses his magic to set them up. He makes Miranda fall in love with Ferdennand and then ask him to marry him. Once they are married Prospero threatens Ferdennand by saying that if they have intercourse before the religious aspect of the marriage he will make their lives horrible. Prospero only does this due to his beliefs but Ferdennand knows how powerful Prospero is with his magi…
