In The Scarlet Ibis, the author, James Hurst tells his story about his younger brother which is physically handicapped. The older brother's pride comes into play and tries to teach his brother how to do strenuous activities. This brings out through the use of tone, setting, and structure (flashback), James Hurst shows that pride can be either an obstacle or motivation.
The way James Hurst shows tone in this short story makes a vivid impact.Doodle's brother was nice although he talked about another side of him.He said of himself, "There is within me a knot of cruelty borne by the stream of love" (Hurst, 215).Pride motivated Doodle's brother to do nice things, however the tide turned when the knot of cruelty came through. How the author felt and his personality shows how he pressed on.
The setting helps picture the situation in the story, as James Hurst shows. It helps you visualize the surrounding and makes a more realistic picture. The saying"…through the saw-toothed ferns, down into the green dimness where the palmetto fronds whispered by the stream" helps you see exactly how things were at that time. This also helps how the feeling was when they were training. The setting helps you feel the story.
The structure is important by showing how he feels after the fact. The flashback mode shows he still remembers."It's strange that all this is still so clear to me" tells that his brother must have made a huge impact on his life.Since the story was told in flashback he makes it seem like he is sorry.
James Hurst shows that pride can be either an obstacle or motivation through the use of tone, setting, and structure (flashback).Pride took Doodle's brother and made him so ashamed that he had to teach Doodle how to walk.Pride pushed him to keep running and in the end let his brother die.
