In the novel, The Outsiders, events are depicted with great detail by the author but in film those events are somewhat lost on the screen in at least five instances.Thefirst instance is revealed in that the story from the novel is told infirst person from Ponyboy's perception, in the movie you do not know that he is telling the entire story.A good example of this is in thefirst sentence of the book when it starts with "When I," this allows the reader to know that someone is explaining from his or her point of view.An additional difference when reading the novel is reflected in the fact that the reader must use his or her own imagination to envision the story. An example of this would be when Ponyboy is reading the poem by Robert Frost. Here the reader has to imagine the sunset where in the movie the sunset reflects the words within the poem. The third difference would be that in a movie you lose sensory detail. This loss of sensory detail is illustrated when Ponyboy talks about getting into a situation with the Socs and he is explaining how he "could smell English Leather shaving lotion and stale tobacco."In a movie unless they discuss or express something about a smell you do not know that the character smells anything. The forth difference would be that when reading a novel you have time to stop and reflect on what has just been said and in a movie it does not allow for a time of reflection. For instance when Ponyboy is describing the death of Johnny as a reader you have time to stop and think about how this might have affected you but in a movie it only allows you to think of the characters. The last difference would have to be in reading a book you get all the details and in a movie those details are lost. This is discovered when Ponyboy is sitting down and writing The Outsiders, in the book you find out that he is writing a theme for the semester because his grades have fallen. In th…
