The Necklace is a story by Guy De Maupassant, translated by Edgar V. Robert. Mathilde is a young woman, who is married to Loisel.He is a clerk in the Ministry of Education.They both lived in the middle class, but Mathilde always dreamed of having a big house and live in luxury.Her husband cannot fulfill her fantasy because he works for minimum wage.
Loisel works hard to support his wife, but she is never satisfied.One day her husband got the invitation from his school and inviting them both for dinner.He knows his wife loves to meet new people and this would make her feel happy.But she said, "what do you expect me to wear to go there?"(6).Mathilde is crying and complains she has no dress or jewelry to wear for dinner.Therefore, he gives her all the money that he saved to buy her a new dress.The next day she said, "It's awful, but I don't have any jewels to wear, not a single gem, nothing to dress up my outfit."(7).
Since he doesn't wants to disappoint her, he asks her to borrow jewelry from her best friend. Mathilde get jealous of her best friend, because she lives in luxury.When her best friends open the jewelry box, Mathilde thinks that her best friend hides all the expensive jewelry because she asks, "Do you have anything else" (7).Then she picks out the gorgeous diamond necklace and puts it on her neck.She is imagining how other people would stare at her expensive diamond necklace at dinner tonight.
At dinner Mathilde feels she is a popular woman, because everyone looks at her with respect.She hopes this moment will never end; therefore, she leaves her husband alone and talks to other people.When she gets home; her necklace is lost.She search everywhere but finds nothing.
