Throughout the novel "The Natural", the author, Bernard Malamud, describes many
important events which lead to the making of a hero.Although the many connections and
relationships which are established in the story are often changing, each of them has a
major impact on the life of the main character.Roy Hobbs has many romantic feelings for
different females at many points in the novel which often cause changes in his life and
career.There are three women, each of whom are major influences on the life of Roy,
which he finds himself in various relationships with throughout the novel.
One of the crucial heartbreaking relationships which Roy Hobbs experiences in the
story, is with a lady with "heartbreaking legs" by the name of Harriet Bird.As they begin
to generate loving feelings for each other, everything goes well between them.Harriet
often expresses her love for Roy openly.Following Roy's immaculate performance in a
big tournament, she tells him he is like "David jawboning the Goliath-Whammer".The
two often have many serious discussions on Roy's career.He explains to Harriet that he
wishes to be "the best there ever was in the game".There is evidence of great spirit and
confidence in Roy during the time of his relationship with Harriet.Although they have
many good times together, Harriet shoots Roy with a gun she carries in hatbox.In prior
circumstances, Harriet has also opened fire on many athletes she has encountered.The
unexpected shocking scene ends the relationship between the two.
Later in his life, Roy meets Memo Paris, whom was formerly the girlfriend of
Bump Bailey.Theirfirst encounter with each other was during a time of great success for
Roy and the rest of his team.Despite the feelings for Roy which Memo has, she still
