“The Hobbit” by J.R.R. Tolkien is a novel which helps the reader to think about the elements of adventure and friendship. In this study I am going to look at the problems Bilbo Baggins faces throughout his journey. The ideas presented by the novelist are, the age-old battle between good and evil, greed and the corrupting power of wealth, and the challenges of the quest. It is enjoyable to view this world through the eyes of J.R.R. Tolkien.
In the story Bilbo starts off as an unadventurous respectable hobbit but he meets an old friend of his, Gandalf, and without realising, he was invited into an adventure.Gandalf ensures Bilbo is chosen to be one of the companions. The journey quickly begins and the dwarves and Bilbo face a number of problems which include their capture by the trolls.Gandalf comes to the rescue. When the group was captured by goblins while sheltering in a cave from a storm and again they are saved by Gandalf but in all the commotion Bilbo is left behind. The little hobbit’s wits are put to the test and he eventually pulls through and escapes with a little help from a little golden ring he finds.J.R.R. Tolkien brings together all the events in a good way and describes the problems and obstacles Bilbo and the dwarves face in such a way that the reader can imagine him/herself in that situation. This is a good way of making the story more realistic and enjoyable.
The age-old battle between good and evil is one of the main ideas brought to the reader in the novel “The Hobbit”.This idea is developed throughout the story and emphasized in a number of events such as the struggle of Bilbo and the dwarves against the trolls. These are large, ugly, violent, not-too-bright creatures. The goblins too are nasty creatures that live underground. The Wargs are wild wolves in league with the goblins, and the spiders. The enormous, carnivorous spiders have the power of speech, and are inhabitants
