The Handmaid's Tale was written by Margaret Atwood and published in 1986.The novel is written about a handmaid named Offred, in the Republic of Gilead.Handmaids are women who are captured and are made to serve elite couples and have their children because that couple is unable to conceive a child. The handmaid has absolutely no option of whether to be there or not. They are controlled by the government and have no rights as individuals. They are monitored every time they leave the premises and are required to check with different sets of guards at different checkpoints.
Before Gilead, Offred had an affair with a married man, Luke. They would meet together at motels to be together.Eventually, Luke divorced his wife and married Offred. They had a daughter together.Offred had not seen her mother in a very long time. Her mother was a single mother and was a female activist who would fight will Offred very often because Offred did not appreciate the sacrifices that the women before her time had made for her.Offred's best friend is a girl that she knows from college named Moira.Moira is a lesbian and is very independent compared to all of the other women in the novel. She attempts two escapes, only one of which is somewhat successful.Other than these friends and family, Offred doesn't really have anyone in her life.
At some point, the military is used to perform a militant coup of the government. The president and many members of congress were assassinated and the new government claimed control. At this time, all women's rights were taken away from them. They were forbid to own property or have a job. They were not allowed to write, and only a select few were allowed to talk anytime they wanted.Handmaids were forbidden to have coffee, smoke cigarettes, and drink alcohol. The new controllers believed that women should be men's servants and nothing more.
