Every novel has many literary terms that must be included to create an excellent story. Such prerequisites are plot, conflict, climax, resolution, protagonist and antagonist. The protagonist represents the main or central character in the story. The antagonist, the character representing all that is bad in society and conflict with protagonist.
In this essay I am going to talk about “Gay Gatsby” which is the protagonist and “Tom Buchannan” which is the antagonist and explain their qualities, traits, personalities and reasons of liking or disliking them.
Tom Buchannan and Gay Gatsby both came from different backgrounds. They both grew up in different ways with different beliefs and morals. They had different experiences and different qualities.
Tom Buchannan was born with money. He grew up in an old wealthy family. He is graduated from New Haven University. Tom is a man of thirty with a sturdy straw –haired. He had a cruel body, hard mouth and a gruff husky tenor voice. He lives in a fairly large and elaborate Georgian Colonial mansion located on East egg where high class people live there, in contrary with West Egg where low standards houses located there.
Tom is married to Daisy Buchannan and has a daughter. Tom’s wife was born with money too, so that;s why they used to pretend that they are happy to cover the real situation up. Daisy didn’t really want to marry Tom, but she is doing out for necessities. Now, their marriage is falling apart, especially because tom is having an affair with another woman.
Myrtle Wilson is Tom’s mistress and she’s cheating on her husband too. This attitude shows that the love of money is the root of all evil in the novel. For these characters value of money is important in their life.
As I mentioned Tom was born in to wealthy family which motivated him to be a spoiled and careless man who won’t be bothered by the suffering he caused to others.
