The movie "The Grapes of Wrath" takes place during the Great Depression, in the mid/late 1920s.The Joad family, like many others, is affected greatly by the depression physically as well as emotionally. They are left homeless and landless by the government, sent to live on the road with little to no money, and must move across the country looking for work so that they might eat.
The family from Oklahoma is forced to move off of the land they have owned for several generations and kicked out of their homes by the government. With dreams of plentiful jobs with high wages, and lush land, all 9 members of the family (and a friend) pack their lives into their old jalopy and head for California.Several flyers have promised them and everyone else jobs as fruit-pickers for a good salary, and a good life there.
Along the way, their lives continue to get worse as they face deaths in the family, and find that jobs are hard to come by, not to mention good wages.Everyone is looking for a job, and it seems no one is offering one.The Joads travel between campsites for the homeless which are "less than prosperous" and run harshly by the police.Everyone is starving and there is nothing to do about it.As the burden gets worse, the men in the family want to go out to try to make it on their own, while the family is tearing apart.
When the Joads do find a decent camp which is run only by the people who live there, and decent jobs, they can't even believe it atfirst.Their past experiences have left them with distrust for all people.
"The Grapes of Wrath" is an eye-opening look at the Great Depression and the people that had to live through it, or die because of it.It also shows the strong human nature of people, along with their will to survive.
