People sometimes let their pride get in the way of doing what is right, and allow bad things to happen just because they are too proud to stop them.In Arthur Miller's novel The Crucible he demonstrates the human trait of pride through many characters such as Judge Danforth, Reverend Parris and Abigail Williams.Danforth, Parris and Abigail are all too proud to come forth and stop the witch trials before they get out of control.Danforth, Reverend Parris and Abigail Williams all fear the witch trials will get out of hand, but are too proud to stop the trials.
Judge Danforth is too proud to admit that the court has misjudged several innocent people.Hale tells Danforth that the girls are lying to the court meaning that the ruling of witchcraft against the accused is wrong.So to protect his pride he denies the girls are lying and chooses to believe them.Instead of listening to Hale and stopping the hangings Danforth proceeds with the hangings and says, "Hang them high over town!Who weeps for these, weeps for corruption!"Danforth lets Proctor hang even though he has been told and it has been proven that the girls have ulterior motives for declaring others witches.Danforth shows his pride by sticking to his decision and not changing it even though it was clearly wrong.In doing so he let the witch trials get out of hand.
Reverend Parris is too proud to stop the witch trials and admit the girls were only sporting, because by admitting that the members of his household were not being good puritans would make him seem like a bad reverend.When Proctor tries to expose what is really going on in the witch trials Parris says that Proctor is lying and that this accusation against Abigail is just Proctor's way of getting Parris thrown out of town.Parris in trying to get Danforth to stop believing Proctor he plays off of Danforth's pride by telling him, "This is a clear attack upon
