The Contender is a book about a young black boy named Alfred Brooks, growing up in a poor part of New York.Alfred is faced with a struggle inside himself to become a better person.Alfred does not want to be just another "good little slave", but he doesn't want to find himself in trouble with Major and Hollis either.Alfred talks with another local boy named Henry, and learns about a nearby gym for boxers.He decides to go there one night, and talks with Mr. Donatelli about what it takes to become a champion boxer.Mr. Donatelli explains to Alfred that "Everybody wants to be a champion.That's not enough.You have to start by wanting to be a contender…"(20) Alfred thinks about the speech for a while, and finally returns to the gym to become a contender.
The main subject of the book is overcoming obstacles.Alfred has to overcome many obstacles to become a contender, and even though his career is ended after only four fights, he knows, and Mr. Donatelli knows that he has the heart of a true contender.One obstacle the Alfred must overcome is his living conditions.Alfred is a poor young black boy whose mother is dead.He is living with his Aunt Pearl, and his best friend has begun to hang around with the local gang.He overcomes this obstacle by not worrying about what others think.When Major, the leader of the gang, confronts Alfred and attempts to force him to help with a crime, Alfred simply says "no", and continues walking.A few steps later, Major stops him again, and tells Alfred that he will help, Alfred replies again with a no.By not allowing Major to bully him into committing a crime, it shows that he will do what he thinks is right, and that he can not be forced into doing wrong.Another obstacle Alfred h!
