Sula-Realism
The novel "Sula" is a shrine of realism. It presents attitudes of the white-man and black-man that is true to history books and shows on Americas' past. I believe there are some elements of naturalism and romanticism also. But Toni Morrison was focused mainly on what life of a black person was like in America's time of hypocracy, dishonor, and white supremacy.
I belive Morrison tried to emphasize realism to show her feelings of how the color conflicts affected her. She drew saddness, depressions, insanity, and other themes with the pen of irony and a passion that made her words as sweet as the smell of Dragon House (yum). I also choose realism as "Sula's" soul because the characters we discover do not go about professing how ZippaDeeDooDaa life is; it's a struggle like my mother says 24/7, and (for Mr. Bradley) damned ironic if you're gonna be happy. Jk.
Realism can be found throughout of "Sula," from the beginning of the story where the white man selfishly tricked the black man into accepting land that was hard to farm on, for payment of his hard, laborious work. Back then, white people always tried to get the upper hand; nowadays, every color of man tries to. There is another example of realism found in the character named Shadrack, who goes pretty much insane and creates National Suicide Day to ease his mind. ( A Suicide Day is neither natural nor romantic…)
My favorite piece of realism found in this book is the incident where the character Helene (a black lady), enters the white coach on a train and met the Crackered Conductor with a hefty smile. Then she enters the black coach where black spectators greet her with unchanging, indifferent faces. This is the saddest form of realism I've come across; already segregated by color, now detached from her own people because of an innocent (shamfull) expression.
