This Hitchcock movie was actually one of only three that I have seen in my lifetime, but the more I see of his films, the more I want to see.His attention to specific details and background information that help to explain hidden details and the many symbolistic meanings of the movie is incredible and is un-matched by anyone else.I really enjoyed watching this 1948 classic about two strangers "chance" meeting on a train.
This movie about a psychotic mother’s boy Bruno Anthony who has this ;chance; meeting of the famous tennis professional Guy Haines on a train. Guy, who wants to move into a career in politics and has been dating a senator’s daughter is awaiting a divorce from his wife. Meanwhile Bruno wants to kill his father, but knows he will be caught because he has a motive. Bruno dreams up a crazy scheme whereby he and Guy exchange murders. Guy takes this as a joke, but Bruno is serious and takes things into his own hands.
What I find so intrigueing about Hitchcock's film was his editing style.It seems that this film is a perfect example of how a film is supposed to be cut.The scene that shows great cutting and great pacing is the scen in which the lighter is dropped in a storm drain by Bruno and he is trying to reach it while at the same time it is inter-cut with Guy playing tennis.The scene plays for about a minute but the tension built by the cutting makes us feel like cheering and crying, hoping and giving up.This is simply one of several scenes that make this film,uch like all of Hitchcock's films great due to great editing.
I also thoght that Hitchcock's use of similar shots was a true sign of what was going on deeper in the film.Specifically the shots of the glasses used to show the killers point of view and what is going on inside his head.The extreme close-ups of the glasses with Guy in the background is amazing cinematography.We are ab
