However, as time flies, was able to harness my mind to the realities of life. I would not devote this paper in tackling mainstream social issUes like poverty or what so. Instead, I will be reflecting on those issues which I have witnessed personally. As a youngster, admit that I am an enthusiastic fan of eating. Children are known for having a big appetite for tasty food and junk foods are not out of the question. I used to eat bags of chips in one day but then it struck me, too much is always bad.

I suddenly do not feel healthy anymore. Then I sparked an interest on what makes unk food so attractive to children even though the food products marketed oftentimes are deemed unhealthy because of their high calorie, high fat, and high sugar contents. I realized that media was a big part of it. They make junk foods look ‘good’ through their advertisements with the use of colorful pictures, catchy tunes, and the like. A further aspect that makes this a sociological problem is the effects of eating junk foods that threatens child health.

The food industry has been blamed by many for the increase in childhood obesity by targeting the child demographic in marketing. As my junk food eating days have gone by, I decided to revamp my lifestyle and be a health conscious person. I did it without the influence of anyone but because of my demanding routine as a student and my belief that health is wealth. Another matter that is at times the cause of social problems is alcohol and drugs. Based on observation, Alcohol and drugs offer very limited positive effects and are extremely addictive.

Many users of drugs are subject to commit crimes. Others used it to deal with their dilemmas in life. Occasionally, some drugs and alcohol abuse will cause deviant and violent ehavior. Moreover, drunk driving is on the rise and is one of the main causes of accidental death. In the U. S. , states have adopted the Administrative License Revocation where if you are caught drinking and driving and found guilty you lose your license for a full year. It is a step being taken by them to avoid this social problem.

However, with some drugs being legalized in other parts of the world and with no laws against alcohol abuse, this social problem would not be easily eradicated. I believe this is why I have a different view about alcohol drinking and why I am not so much of a fan of it. Growing up in a family whom I presume that members are hard drinkers, I decided to take the road not taken. It may be just a case of ‘drinking occasionally’; however, I’m still afraid that I will be attached to it and let it be part of my way of life.

Besides of having a notion of a ‘good girl gone bad’ image and the possible psychological problems it can bring , I strongly reckon that alcohol abuse imposes threat to our health as my own grandfather suffered kidney failure due to excessive alcohol drinking for years before he passed away. The third and final social issue that I observed the most mong my peers is the concerns of single-parent households. A single parent is a parent who lives with one or more children without the second parent. There are a number of potential problems that single parents might face.

If their relations with former husband or wife are still not 0k, their conflicts might influence children negatively. This redefines the concept of family as well and thus makes it a social phenomenon. Several friends of mine way back in grade school and high school are part of single-parent households. Obviously, it was very difficult for them and their parent. They have encountered problems in school and have to get used to new relationships of their parents and to new people that become the part of their lives.

As for the part of the parent left to them, many of which are mothers, they are faced by financial problems and had to take additional hours or even to work full time. Indeed, it is a stressful task and experience to raise children on your own, considering the responsibility and effort one needs to give in. I am very thankful that my family is not under this typecast. On the other hand, I do admire that these single-parents do not feel ashamed and emain strong in life and for their children.
