In the movie, “Rebel Without a Cause”, it shows us three middle class teens (Jim, Judy, and Plato) who become rebellious because of problems within their families.The false interpretation of teenage rebellion is justified in this movie.We see three teenagers who are completely victimized by their parents.
Jim Stark (played by James Dean) has been put through a tough situation throughout his life.His mother doesn't give him hardly any attention, and his father is extremely tough with discipline.He later meets up with two other people (Judy and Plato) who share many of the same problems as he does.
Judy, like Jim, is another teenager denied of love by her parents.Once she reaches her sexual maturity, her father begins to reject her.Plato also suffers from parental denial, because his parents are never at home. These three kids are drawn together at school because of their family problem similarities.
During school, the film shows different social groups and the constant discrimination against people who are considered to be different from “normal” people.This prejudice causes conflicting feelings to build up between Jim and Judy’s boyfriend Buzz.It eventually leads to a knife fight and then an unlawful game of “chicken run” which tragically ends in Buzz’s death.
When Jim informs his parents about everything that has taken place, they tell him that he must tell the truth about what had happened. Throughout the entire movie we see Jim’s parents to be these cruel and evil people who have driven their son to act in the way he has acted.This is a Freudian ideal and denies the fact that every individual has the freedom to make their own decisions, and Jim did not have to take part in that “chicken run”, which ended in Buzz’s death.
