During the twenties prohibition was in effect, making all alcohol illegal. Jay Gatsby had just about any imaginable kind of liquor . Furthermore, Planes in the 1920s were not affordable for many individuals, except Gatsby whom has a new beautiful plane. In this day and age Gatsby was very rich and could afford anything, even the most luxurious of planes to cruise in.
Cash in these days was short on hand, the reason being that the wealthy had stashed most of this gold and silver. For example, the top ten percent of the population was high class and controlled 40-50% of the money market, including Gatsby himself. These wealthy people had almost total control over the market, Gatsby spent his money selfishly. In the past, Jay had a love affair with the affluent Daisy.Knowing he could not marry her because of the difference in their social status, he leaves her to amass wealth to reach her economic standards.
