There are many scenes that make Citizen Kane a movie to be remembered.A scene that stands out in my mind is in the introduction of the movie where young Charles Kane is playing in the snow outside the house and the camera view is focusing on both Charles' mom inside and him outside playing on his sled in the snow.Up to this time no one has ever seen this type of camera view where two different objects are being focused on at the same time.Another scene that comes to mind is where the man in charge of finding out what "Rosebud" meant, walks into Kane's library where important artifacts and paperwork of his is stored.The camera view starts behind the man and moves along with him into the library. The camera view is focused on not only him, but also the rest of the room, along with everything in the room.This is another example of Greg Toland's unique way of filming.Citizen Kane is thefirst movie we have seen that uses this distinctive way of focusing on both far away objects as well as those in close proximity. Therefore, it is apparent that both of these scenes use depth of field.
The structure of Citizen Kane is very distinctive compared to other movies we have seen in class.Citizen Kane begins with Charles' death, where he speaks his last words, then immediately goes to childhood.The movie takes you through his early adulthood years up to the time when he turns twenty-one, in which he gains full control of his riches.Then, the movie shows four different viewpoints of people who were close to Charles Kane.Finally, the movie returns back to the day of his death.Even though the movie switches back and forth to different points in Charles' life, it still makes perfect sense and it is comprehendible to the viewers.Prior to Citizen Kane, the filming industry had never seen the structure of a story written in flashback manner.This was influential to the film industry because…
