J.D Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye depicts a young teenage boy, Holden Caulfield, who gets kicked out of private schools continuously and stays in New York City before returning home to tell his family of his failure. Salinger’s main focus in the novel is Holden’s maturing and growing. Maturity is shown through being on his own in NYC, having a former homosexual teacher and his use of judgment.
Holden Caulfield finds himself in the center of New York City searching for entertainment. However he continuously finds himself inside the walls of the same museum where everything stays constant. While trying to act mature, Holden finds himself trying to act older than he is. One incident he goes to a bar in New York, but his phony acts only cause him to get laughed at. Another incident he is riding in an elevator and the elevator operator asks if he wants a girl, Holden replies “it’s quite embarrassing when somebody comes up and asks you something like that” He accepts, but eventually sends the girl away. Holden on many occasions lies about his age to women in lounges, but nobody ever believes his sarcastic attempts.
Mr. Antolini had been a close friend, along with an English teacher of Holden’s. Holden had called Mr. Antolini to see him. Of course being fond of Holden, Mr. Antolini agrees. They meet and drink some coffee. As Holden falls asleep, he wakes up to someone caressing his head. “It really scared hell out of me,” he thought as he sees that it is Mr. Antolini.Holden believes this was a consequence of homosexuality. Holden leaves but his maturity isn’t willing to now except Mr. Antolini. Because of his lack of maturity, he keeps himself from staying indoors and by being friends with another man.
Holden’s use of judgement is shown through out the story. One particular part in the book he recalls his experiences with girls and his compliance with them when they ask him to stop his advances. “You never know whether they really want…
