The Masque of the Red Death

>It could even give us insight into his psyche and the world he was in. Perhaps there was some sort of incident in his past that allowed this fascination to manifest itself? After all, the poem does state, “The “Red Death” had long devastated the country. No pestilence had ever been so fatal, or so hideous. Blood was its Avatar and its seal. ” His fascination might have even been commonplace if the disease had ravaged the country for some time. Then again, there are some people who prefer such images; one man’s taste isn’t always the same as another.

However it could eave been that his attestation was just a manifestation to his own tears brought to light. Still, even if his fascination explainable, he teetered on a delicate balance that threatened to consume him along with his people. Over time we have seen many examples of grotesque images and behavior being completely acceptable in different cultures. Many people even have an image of Jesus hanging on the cross in their homes today or decorate with ghosts and skeletons on Halloween. In modern times we do not see what happens after death, we do not have to have any part of it. Yet at a time of an outbreak such as this, you could not have gotten away from the stench and sight of horrible death all around you. Certainly people would have eventually become almost numb to the sight Of death and it just didn’t bother the prince as much as one would think.. The prince’s interest is also somewhat explainable because people’s tastes are not all the same. Different people have different opinions in everything from art and music to architecture and even literature.

Many people listen to dark music with disturbing lyrics today; there are a number of bands that have odd names and odd pictures representing them. Some even focus on the occult, others on death and destruction. The point is that everyone has title to their own opinions and the prince certainly did given his poison, The prince might have thought nothing of the odd things he surrounded himself with because it was accepted within his circle, prince Prospers, and his cohorts, could have been totally enamored with this type to genre which would completely explain his level of association.

Still, Prosperous engrossment could just border on insanity; he does seem quite obsessive and out of touch with the real world. The wording of the poem also suggests that this may be nothing more than a bad dream. Or it could be just a fear that that the prince could not escape and this is how it has manifested itself. Throughout time people have built monuments to things they hate and fear because they want others to be reminded of the past; to teach new generations the lessons Of history. Perhaps, “by building these monuments it helps them unique there fear by facing it daily instead hiding from it. Things like this could have served to remind him Of his own mortality and that although he was wealthy, he was not indestructible. Perhaps they served to remind him what was happening beyond his walls; the very thing that threatened all within. These are all examples of what could have brought Prince Prosperous fascination into existence and possibly explained why he acted as he did. Perhaps death and disgust surrounded him all along and his actions were just a physical manifestation of his surroundings.

Then again, he could have just been a tan of this type to art and expression. We do know that, ‘When his dominions were half depopulated, he summoned to his presence a thousand hale and light-hearted friends from among the knights and dames of his court, and with these retired to the deep seclusion of one of his castellated abbeys. ” Yet still he surrounded them with the macabre. The poem also tells us that “Prince Prospers was happy and dauntless and sagacious? ‘ Yet could this have just masked the fear he had built up on the inside?
