Daisy Buchanan and Lady Brett Ashley

As Cohn, “says she is Circe, Who turns men into swine”. By turning them into lower returns, she uses them and then kills them at the right moment. On the other hand Daisy Buchanan is also a very careless person. She thinks more about herself more than she does of anyone else. She does not use men as much as Lady Brett Ashley does but she does marry for money over love, and when she realizes that Jay has money she starts questioning her marriage with Tom. She is also a very shady character that changes throughout the story.

At first Jay sees her as the green light that he is reaching out towards across the water and when he finally sees her he realizes she is still unattainable like that green light. To start with; Lady Brett Ashley is as a very odd character taking on masculine roles. Instead to playing the timid young woman, Brett, known as the “New Woman,” is able to take what she wants. She is first introduced arriving at a bar with a group of homosexual men. Her association with homosexuals may be that she relates to them better than her straight friends because, like Brett, the homosexual men are also looking tort male companionship.

Another masculine detail Lady Brett Ashley shows is her excessive drinking According to John W. Crowley in The White Logic,” drinking is a masculine trait. The act of drinking, especially in a bar, is inherently male and “integral to the rugged ideal of manliness. ” When people think of heavy drinking alcoholics, they think about some big fat man With a beer gut Who looks like he lives under a bridge. Some one who wears trashy clothes and doesn’t shave very often. Hemmingway represents Lady Brett Ashley as a very strong drinker With many problems.

Lady Brett Ashley is a very beautiful slim girl who is well dressed and handles her self very well. “There is more to Lady Brett Ashley than just sex and booze, but everything is intertwined with both. She is shallow and self-centered, caring only for herself. Beret’s relationship with Jake is a love/hate relationship at best,” She knows they both love each other, but because she is so selfish, and her inability to come to terns with his impotence; she continues to stay in his life, leaving them both miserable. “Oh darling” Brett said, “I’m so miserable. Had that feeling of going through something that has all happened before, “You were happy a minute ago. ” Brett is usually able to hide her misery trot other members tooth group they hang around but when she is alone with Jake she can not help her self and test it all go telling him how nice it would be for them to be together. Jake always agrees with her and says how great it would be for it love to work out between them. But when Lady Brett Ashley and Jake are not around each other she is off drinking her brain out and having affairs faith other men, and not being loyal to anyone she talks speaks to.

She tells Jake almost everything she does right after she does it because she has to get it Off Of her chest and Jake is the one she turns to. Jake just listens and offers opinions to help Lady Brett Ashley. It just shows owe selfish she is only worrying about her self when she is talking to Jake; When she knows he loves her. “Lady Ashley is a very self-centered, Wild, free-living alcoholic. She stoops from one man to the next, when she really love only one man. Jake is the man she is in love with, but as you can very easily tell she’s not ready to settle down.

Plus her hormones must still be raging, since she sleeps with a guy like Cohn. ” Lady Brett Ashley is the reasons for the conflict in Jake and Robert Conn’s friendship because the both are in love with her and she just keeps playing games with the doth of them. Even though she truly loves Jake she still goes out with Robert Cohn and sleeps with him, then comes crying to Jake; continuing to tell him how much she is in love with him and how perfect the would be together, knowing that it could never happen.

While Lady Brett Ashley is playing Ganges between almost every male character in the story and having a good time doing it: she doesn’t realize that all of these guys are fighting each other and ruining their friendships because she goes from one to the other having sex with them and telling them that they are the one for her. Lady Brett Ashley does not pay much attention on how she lives her life and how bad it really looks on her _ But when she went to church she realized she must be doing something wrong. She says in chapter 18, “Come on,” she whispered. “Let’s get out of here.

Makes me damned nervous. ” Outside in the hot brightness of the street Brett looked up at the treetops in the wind. The praying had not been much Of a success. “Don’t know Why I get so nervy in church,” Brett said. “Never does me any good. ” We walked along. ” I’m damned bad for a religious atmosphere,” Brett said. I’ve the wrong type Of face. ” She can’t take the thrilling atmosphere of the church, her own demons make her too nervous in such a place. The “nervy” feeling she gets in the church probably has more to do with her denial of her own unhappiness than with anything else she thinks is going on.

She finally realizes she has done so many things wrong and it is all catching up with her. She gets the feeling of being sick with a nervous feeling cause she realizes everyone around her know many things about her. Everyone knows how much she drinks, and how many guys she has slept with before arraign and those are things your not suppose to do. With Daisy Buchanan many people have different options on what kind of woman she really is. “Daisy floats around as it she were on the wind, fluttering. She floats with Tom, following him wherever he wants to move, whenever he wants to move.

At times, it seems as if Daisy barely exists because her image is like smoke, moving and changing, disappearing. ” She just hangs around and does what ever Tom tells her to do when he wants it done, because she wants to keep all his money available in her life “Nick characterizes her as a careless errors who smashes things up and then retreats behind her money. “We shook hands and started Just before reached the hedge remembered something and turned around. ” Thefts a rotten crowd,” shouted across the lawn. “You’re worth the whole damn bunch put together” I’ve always been glad said that.

It was the only compliment I ever gave him, because disapproved of him from beginning to end. First he nodded politely, and then his face broke into that radiant and understanding smile, as if we’d been in ecstatic cahoots on that fact all the time. His gorgeous pink rag Of a suit made a bright spot Of lour against the white steps, and thought of the night when first came to his ancestral home, three months before. The lawn and drive had been crowded with the faces of those who guessed at his corruption – and he had stood on those steps, concealing his incorruptible dream, as he waved them good-by. Handed him for his hospitality. We were always thanking him for that – I and the others. ” Nick is trying to show Daisy that money and class of have nothing to do with what type of character you are. You can be the richest guy/girl in the world but without treating people with respect and caring a little bit about someone else, nothing really matters, because no one has any respect for you or all your money. Any type to input you have to add to a conversation does not matter because they do not want to listen to anything you say.

Daisy is stuck between money and love while she wants Toms’ money she wants the love back that she had with Gatsby before he left for the war, At the first of the book she does not even know Gatsby exist when she is talking to Jordan. ” You live in West Egg, she remarked contemptuously. Know somebody there. Don’t know a single, said Daisy. You must know Gatsby. Gatsby? Demanded Daisy What Gatsby? This is showing that she is very surprised to hear the name Gatsby which gives a hint that Daisy is still thinking about Gatsby.

Also this shows that Daisy is Off in her Own little world not noticing Gatsby by now because the two eggs are very short distance apart and this is why Jordan is very surprised when Daisy admits that she knows no-one from the West Egg. Everyone knows Daisy still loves Gatsby but she also gives off the impression of not caring or really noticing him until she realizes he actually had money just like Tom. So now that Jay Gatsby now has money she starts to realize him because he believes she can now have Jays’ love and the money she is getting from Tom all with Jay.

Both Daisy Buchanan and Lady Brett Ashley both had problems with their selfish ways and their choices for money over love. Although Daisy Buchanan was judged with her choice of choosing money from Tom Buchanan over the love of Jay Gatsby she still was a better person in general than Gaudy Brett Ashley. Many women from the sass’s looked up to these two characters. For example before the sass’s women were barely allowed to show any skin, After these books and during the sass’s we began to see what they called flappers, which were young omen who dressed and behaved in a boldly unconventional manner.

Lady Brett Ashley and Daisy Buchanan modeled flappers perfectly. Especially Lady Brett Ashley the way she handled her self; with the excessive drinking and the sexual relationship with every guy she talked to but one. With all the research and reading both of these books can confirm that Daisy Buchanan would be the best overall role model between these two women, but if you had to pick one to look up to you should probably find someone else because these two women made some very bad decisions and probably are not the ideal role models.
