In Salem, Massachusetts, in 1692, a fear of witchery grows to the hysteria level.Arthur Miller bases his play entitled The Crucible on these events with John Proctor as the major character.Proctor's internal and external conflicts cause him pain and grief throughout the play.During the play, Proctor experiences problems with Abigail, Elizabeth, himself, and the community.Proctor's issue with Abigail stems from their affair while John's problems with his wife, Elizabeth, stem from John's affair with Abigail and the accusation of Elizabeth being a witch. In addition, John struggles with morals, loyalty, pride, and survival issues that stress him throughout the play. Finally, Proctor's conflicts with the community of Salem stem from the issue within himself, with his wife, and with Abigail.

In the movie version story of The Crucible, there are three significant alterations that made an impact on the story's synopsis: the various outdoor scenes and Abigail Williams' more overt immorality.
The outdoor scene during the reproving and confession of John Proctor taken place in the large puddles in the town gave a greater effect in the story's intentions. The townspeople gathered around John Proctor during Mary's accusation signified the town's attitude toward John Proctor. They saw him as a good man that had integrity and great piety with a love of God."God is DEAD!" yells Proctor as he shocks the crowd further.
Abigail Williams was more sinister in the movie as she truly performed her evil gesticulations. She was much more stern and wicked. The scene where theyfirst hanged the condemned portrayed Abigail enjoying the whole event as if it were nourishing her.Her motive to be with John Proctor was revealed as she constantly visits Danforth to reveal of news that certain townspeople, especially ones she detested, were supposedly committing witchcraft. Her persistence shined as she showed no feeling of guilt or remorse and as she runs away and steals thirty-pounds from her uncle.
Such revisions in the movie intensified the implied meanings of the story.Hearing their lines and context and seeing the scenes come to life also assisted the modification of the movie. The changes were significant and the rest of the movie was very close to the plot, especially with the extra scenes.
