Egypt is well known for its pyramids. The pyramidswerebuiltforpharaohsandtheirclosest relativestobeburiedin.Pharaohs were rulers of Egypt. The tombs, where the pharaohs and their families were buried, were in the complex build of the pyramids. There are three pyramids, one for King Khufu, one for King Khafre, and one for King Menkaura.
The pyramid complexes of Giza (location of the pyramids) served as a source of building material for Cairo because they used the top layer of the pyramids which was made of limestone to build parts of Cairo.
Thefirst pyramid was built for King Khufu. Khufu's pyramid is the largest in the world. There were over 2,300,000 blocks used to build this pyramid. The base of Khufu's pyramid is the size of 7 city blocks. The length of each side of the base was originally 754 feet, but now it is only 745 feet because of the top layer of limestone that was stripped off to help in the building of Cairo. The average weight of a block used in these pyramids is 2.5 tons. Some blocks that were used for the ceiling in the King's chamber (the actual burial place of King Khufu) weigh up to 9 tons, making the total weight of this pyramid 6.5 million tons.
The second pyramid was built for King Khafra. Khafra's pyramid looks taller than all the others but it's not. The reason it looks taller is because it was built on higher ground. Khafra was the son of Khufu and he ruled for 18 years. Khafra's pyramid is the second largest in the world. The total base area covers 11 acres.
The third pyramid built was for King Menkaura. Menkaura is thought to be Khufu's grandson or Khafra son. Menkaura's pyramid is the smallest of the three. The height of this pyramid is only 203 feet. That is less than half of the height of Khufu's pyramid. Although Menkaura was thought to be equal to the other Kings the reason his pyramid was smaller is unknown
