The Romans dominated the ancient world for almost 500 years.At their zenith, they controlled a majority of land in the European region.It was an area that extended from the Atlantic coastline of Spain in the west, to the shores of the Caspian Sean in the east; from the forests of Britain in the north, to the rain-thirsty deserts of Egypt in the south.As expansive and incredible as this great empire was, it was not built in a day.The progression of the expanse took hundreds of years of accomplishments.More specifically, The Roman Empire went through four categorical phases; The Rise of Rome, The Late Roman Republic, The Early Roman Empire and The Late Roman Empire.Each phase contains specific occurrences, which helped to shape them characteristically as well as key individuals who influenced these times immensely.
Thefirst category of the progression of the Roman Empire is the Rise of Rome.The story of Romulus and Remus depicts the fabled creation of the empire.These were two brothers who embodied Robin Hood type ethics of stealing from the rich and giving to the poor.After they participated in overthrowing a tyrant king, the brothers became quite prosperous themselves.Romulus controlled the land known as Palentine Hill and Remus controlled that of Aventine Hill.Soon afterwards, the two brothers had argument over a wall that was built between their properties.Remus jumped the wall in an attempt to defy Romulus but was slain by his only brother.This portrayal of events explains not only the origin of the name given to Rome (Romulus), but it also gives a reason for the location of the establishment of Rome.The Gaul's, or otherwise known as the Celts, ascended from the Po Valley to be thefirst to defeat the Roman army.This resulted in the veryfirst sacking in Rome.T!
