Townsend Harris was an American diplomat who was sent to Japan to persuade them into opening Japan ports to trade. While Harris is in Japan, Tamora, the governor of Japan, sent a geisha girl named Okichi to make Harris feel more at home. One day a ship came to Japan that had Cholera on it. Cholera is a very deadly and infectious disease. Five people swam to shore that was infected by the disease. The people of Japan became ill and many died, Harris figured out that the only thing that would kill the disease was fire so they burnt the village. Tamora took Harris and Henry as prisoners and they were to be sent home on the first boat. The next day the people of the village and Tamora came to thank Harris for getting rid of the disease. Tamora made arrangements for Harris to go to Edo. The people of the village came to Harris to be his precession to Edo. When Harris arrived he was shown the great hall and was asked many questions. The next day lord Shesho was assassinated at the archery competition. Everyone blamed Harris for his death saying that the gods were punishing them, they were asked to leave Edo. Tamora was planning to kill Harris. Tamora called Okichi to the temple to tell her about his plan. Okichi promised her utmost loyalty and trust to fulfill what task she was given. Okichi was asked to put a red scarf on Harris’ door so that when Tamora came to assassinate him he would have no trouble finding his room. When Tamora arrived he discovered that the scarf was on Okichi’s door. Since Tamora did not fulfill his duties he killed himself because he was seen as a disgrace to all of his community. Okichi felt that since she did not fulfill her duties to Tamora that she should run away and never see Harris again. The trade agreement was eventually signed.
