It was presented as one of the four greatest writers in the history of literature with Norwegian Henrik Ibsen, Jonas Lie and Alexander Kielland by the publisher Gyldendal. He wrote the words of the national anthem of Norway. He received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1903. |

Echegaray came from an intellectual background in Madrid, Spain, where his father was a professor of Greek. The family had Basque roots. He began his career with studies in economics and mathematics and was himself a professor at the relatively young age. After the revolution in 1868, he was taken into the Spanish Government, where he held several positions, including finance minister and Schools. When the revolutionaries then lost power, he made instead career as a writer of dramas. |
